Linda Neal of Mellowood Vineyard knows her way around grape vines. She has spent the better part of adulthood tending some of the best vineyards in California, including her own Fair Play vineyard. When asked about this year’s harvest she replied, “It’s been a beautiful year in the vineyard. We have nice moderate sized crops and have had perfect growing conditions”
To Linda, 2013 will be a year no one will remember, because there was no drama, just amazing fruit! Amazing wines start with amazing fruit, and that is just what Linda has at Mellowood Vineyard. Her syrah and zinfandel vines planted in 2002 were planted on 9 acres within the 25 acres that makes up property. These two varietals were chosen because of how well they are suited to the soils and microclimate of her little part of Fair Play.
A visit to the tasting room and you will find a 2010 Zinfandel, a 2010 Syrah, and a non-vintage red blend of Zinfandel and Syrah called Red Hat. Linda’s wines are soft, elegant and well balanced and once you try them, you’ll be talking about them to your friends. Once such friend of Mellowood is the San Diego Opera, who recently chose the Mellowood Zinfandel to be the official wine of the San Diego Opera! But these wines just don’t pair well with opera, they pair well with food too!
The next food and wine pairing happens on September 21. Chef Giovanni will prepare a Bocconato dinner at the winery to celebrate the release of his new cookbook. This is truly a memorable evening, and Chef Giovanni’s dinners at Mellowood always sell out so make sure to get your tickets to this special event.
Speaking of events, Linda holds special vineyard clinics at certain times of the growing season that focus on an aspect of vineyard management, such as suckering or pruning. However, Linda is always ready to help you create your own special event for you and your friends at Mellowood Vineyard, so be creative and call her for more details!
