Cedarville Vineyard recently received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast for its 2010 Zinfandel, but owner/winemaker Jonathan Lachs humble nature seems to make him almost whisper that accomplishment to me as I sit and chat about all things Cedarville! His understated manner when talking about his award winning wines is a quiet reflection of his genuine feeling of being blessed to be able to live and work at Cedarville Vineyard. He shares this dream with his wife and co-winemaker Susan Marks.
What they have built at Cedarville Vineyard is nothing short of amazing. Producing small batch wines from their organically farmed vineyard, Jonathan and Susan continue to make waves in the wine world, both locally and regionally. For example, Wine Enthusiast also awarded scores above 90 points to the 2011 Viognier and the 2010 Syrah, while giving the 2010 Petite Sirah a 90! The secret is out that these wines are awesome. Another example is the nod from wine writer Michael Cervin from IntoWINE.com, who in his recent article called “Top 100 Most Influential U.S. Winemakers”, has Jonathan Lachs among the rankings!
Jonathan is obviously a very talented winemaker, but he will be the first to tell you to make great wine, you have to have great fruit, and Cedarville Vineyard does! Jonathan says as a result of their organic farming practices, they have very good vine health. Rodent control is always an issue in the vineyards, but with the Barn Owl boxes installed throughout the Cedarville Vineyard, there is no problem! Jonathan loves having these guys around, and says this is the third season the owls have come back to live.
Tasting Cedarville Vineyard wines is by appointment only, and because they are small batch wines, vintages do not stay around too long. However, there are opportunities to taste the wines outside of the tasting room and one of those opportunities is coming up on September 7th. The ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) Sierra Foohill Flights event is being hosted at Miraflores Winery, just north of Fair Play. Activities include a Flights Seminar featuring wines from 12 Sierra Foothills wineries, including Mellowood Vineyard, which will be featured in two weeks in our next newsletter. Other activities include a walk-about tasting and dinner. For tickets or more information visit zinfandel.org.
The next time you are in Fair Play, be sure to schedule a tasting at Cedarville Vineyards and see what all the attention is about. You will not be disappointed! Call 530-620-WINE (9463) or visit cedarvillevineyard.com to make reservations!
